Huawei has not been stopped by the cancellation of MWC 2020 and has held a conference in Barcelona to present its news; The Gizlogic team   has been among the lucky ones to attend the event and we can attest that the biggest novelty has been the  Huawei Mate Xs , the company’s new foldable smartphone and the natural evolution of the Mate X.

Going into detail, the  Huawei Mate Xs  looks like a tablet with peculiar characteristics at first glance, but its hinge allows it to fold and acquire the proportions of a Smartphone that can be carried in your pocket. If it sounds familiar to you, it is because in fact it repeats the same premise as its predecessor, adopting the “hawk wing” design patented by Huawei.

When the terminal is unfolded, it acquires a diameter of 8 inches , but when it is doubled its size is reduced to 6.6 inches at the front and 6.38 inches at the back. The panel used is of the AMOLED type and exhibits a resolution of 2,480 x 2,200 pixels in total, but that is not all, since it also consists of an innovative hinge under the screen, which makes it possible to fold the terminal.

Huawei Mate Xs - Display

As can be seen in the images, there is no type of notch or perforation that hinders the ” FullView  Display” of the Huawei Mate Xs. However, what we will notice is the thickness of the right side, since it houses the device’s camera module on the back, as well as a USB Type-C port at the bottom. The right side itself consists of a volume button and a power button that in turn integrates a fingerprint reader.

The back cover reveals how all the magic is done. Here you can find the hinge that makes the folding of the device possible.

Hardware and Features : New Huawei Mate Xs with flexible screen, hawk wing design and 5G

The  Huawei Mate Xs  integrates the latest and greatest in mobile technology, starting with the in-house Kirin 990 5G chipset . This chip not only brings better performance to the table, but it also has an NPU that creates a solid foundation for the development of future AI capabilities. This chip is complemented by 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage ; the latter is expandable up to 256GB using Huawei NM cards.

One detail that cannot be missed is its impressive 4,500mAh battery , which does not stand out for its capacity, but for its super fast 55W charge that promises to recover 85% of the battery in just 30 minutes . Huawei claims that the charging speed of the  Huawei Mate Xs  is 2.3 times higher than that  of Samsung’s Galaxy  Fold .

Loading speed

As an operating system, the Huawei Mate  Xs  runs on Android 10-based EMUI 10.0.1 and lacks Google apps, instead incorporating the App  Gallery  and Huawei mobile services. Additionally, the multi-window function can split the screen for 2 different applications and thus take advantage of the multitasking potential of an 8-inch panel. You can even open an application in 2 split windows to easily manage different tasks at the same time with the HUAWEI application multiplier.

We have had the opportunity to test the Mate Xs ourselves

In terms of connectivity,  Huawei’s Balong 5000 5G modem  supports the NSA and SA 5G bands . Likewise, the Huawei Mate  Xs  ensures full connectivity with its Dual-SIM design and compatibility with most 5G / 4G / 3G / 2G bands.

The company also mentioned during the presentation that the Huawei Mate  Xs has an efficient heat dissipation and adapted to the challenges of a folding design thanks to the flexible bionic graphite that is inside.

Cameras

At the rear is the suite of LEICA cameras that will make the dreams of mobile photography enthusiasts come true. First of all, we have a 40MP RYYB camera with f / 1.8 aperture , this is accompanied by an 8MP telephoto lens with optical image stabilization and f / 2.4 aperture. This is followed by an ultra-wide-angle camera with 16MP resolution and f / 2.2 aperture. Finally, the set is complemented by a 3D time-of-flight camera , which is in charge of perceiving depth.
