Steam Deck makes Ubisoft re-interested in its store: “If it’s big, we’ll put games in it”
President Yves Guillemot is “pleased” by the announcement of Valve’s new portable console.
Ubisoft has increasingly moved away from Steam into the PC world, publishing its games through Ubisoft Connect and rival stores like the Epic Games Store . However, the French company seems to have regained its interest in Steam, and all this thanks to Gabe Newell’s new product: Steam Deck , the hybrid PC console in the style of Nintendo Switch. This was stated by the president of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot , during his last meeting with the company’s shareholders.
Shared by IGN, the head of Ubisoft stated last night that ” we are happy for the arrival of Steam Deck to the industry, it proves to be the continuation of a flow of very innovative new hardware that makes its debut in the market.” A product that will make them rethink their Steam releases if it succeeds: “Let’s wait and see how big [Steam Deck] becomes, and if it’s big, we can get our games out of it .”
Of course, it must be remembered that the Steam Deck is an open platform and players will be able to install other operating systems and stores on it. So, technically, it would be possible to access Ubisoft Connect from the console without any impediment, although Guillemot has not fallen into it. The fact is that Ubisoft regains interest in Steam , and all this thanks to this new hardware that you can now reserve .
Steam Deck will begin to reach homes from December 2021 . A portable console that has paid a lot of attention to avoiding the dreaded stick drift , and that will allow users to upgrade its internal SSD in the future , if more space is needed. For its part, Ubisoft has presented fiscal results somewhat worse than those of 2020 in the last quarter, although they meet their forecasts, and talk about expanding their catalog with AAA and F2P games .
