How to learn irregular verbs
Learning a language requires mastering its grammar system, verb sentences, spelling rules and practicing, sometimes tirelessly, with grammar exercises.
I was sleeping or je dormais in French.
Do you know what are the irregular verbs in French ? They are the verbs that belong to the third conjugation or those of the third group, which is divided into five subgroups:
Verbs that are conjugated like sleep .
Verbs that are conjugated as to come .
Verbs that are conjugated like ouvrir .
Verbs ending in -quérir.
Verbs ending in -ir and that do not follow any rules.
To learn the conjugation of irregular verbs, you just have to memorize it! But we give you some tips to get it:
Our tip # 1 : learn little by little, with review cards , on a regular and hierarchical basis. Learn verbs in groups, while including them in simple sentences.
Our tip # 2 : describe everyday life situations . For example, instead of learning the conjugation tables by heart, you can optimize your French learning with short sentences:
Je thought that j’obtiendrai mes exams : I think I will pass my exams.
Je dois travailler beaucoup pour améliorer mes notes : I have to work hard to improve my grades.
Si j’avais de l’argent, j’irais in Latin America : if I had money, I would go to Latin America.
Well sûr! Je connais cet homme, c’était mon voisin l’année dernière! : Sure! I know this man, he was my neighbor last year!
In this way, we can create a set of simple sentences with conjugated verbs in all tenses and all people. This will make a lot of sentences, but the main thing is to memorize the verbal groups , not the sentences themselves.
Last tip : make sure your spelling is correct because poor accent placement can lower your grade on a test!
