How to frame an embroidery?

Once you have finished the embroidery, you can frame it to give it to a loved one or hang it in your home. You can frame it through a professional, but you can also frame it yourself with a little patience and some accessories.

Frame for framing
The frame can be used for framing, but it is only a temporary solution.

To make the frame, you should choose a fairly stiff cardboard to keep the canvas straight and stretched. However, the cardboard should not be too thick, as you may not be able to close the frame.

You obviously need a frame. You can buy a store-made one, but you can also make it yourself with wood dowels and wood glue. However, keep in mind that in stores there are also fairly neutral frames that lend themselves to easy personalization (with sequins, beads, ribbons, etc.).

To make the frame, you can also use cotton to fill the embroidery if you want to give it relief.

Framing your work yourself is a real pleasure since you can choose the materials that interest you the most. It is also a way to personalize a gift to the end. For advice on where to buy supplies, go to the haberdashery. These stores sell everything related to embroidery, but also crochet, knitting, sewing, patchwork, etc.

Once you have all the elements, you have two possibilities:

  • Frame with glue.
  • Frame without glue.

Of course, keep in mind that with glue it is much faster.

To do this, place the traditional embroidery or cross stitch on the cardboard (cut it to the dimensions of the inside of the frame). Flip everything over and glue the edges to the cardboard. In the corners, make sure the canvas is not sticking out. It will be enough to cut the angles.

If you don’t want to use glue, you will need to use embroidery thread strong enough to make a bead between the opposite edges of the canvas. This will give you a grid that will keep the embroidery canvas straight.

If you want to highlight the embroidery, do not forget to put cotton between the cardboard and the canvas before gluing or sewing.

As in everything, you will take the lead and decide when your masterpiece is ready.
