How to learn to sew a zigzag

In sewing classes , beginners always learn how to perform the zigzag stitch . Like the straight stitch, the zigzag stitch is essential when you want to learn how to sew any type of fabric.

In fact, the zigzag stitch is used not only to sew  hems or buttonholes, but also to reinforce sewing work on stretch fabrics. 

When it comes to a flexible and elastic fabric, it is very difficult to find the right thread tension so that the seam is clean and flawless. The zigzag stitch helps seamstresses in this process.

The biggest advantage of the zigzag stitch is that it can  vary depending on its length and width.  Thus, depending on your sewing project, it is quite easy to adapt the zigzag stitch to any situation. 

Bead stitch for buttonholes, satin stitch, wide stitch, classic stitch… How to make a good zigzag stitch? This stitch can be sewn by hand or with a sewing machine.

Using a sewing machine it is done very quickly. Simply choose the corresponding mode of the machine, raise the presser foot, slide the fabric, lower the presser foot, and start sewing. You can learn how to sew this stitch both on your own and with sewing classes.

By hand, the sewing exercise takes longer. After making the stitch backwards, it is advisable to make a first stitch in one direction to make a part of the zigzag and then fly the seam to finish forming the zigzag. During the second part,  the needle must go through the first holes  but in the opposite direction to complete the parts where the thread has not yet passed.

Then finish the seam with a back stitch and the exercise is finished. However, you should pay attention to the tension of the thread so that it is neither too tight nor too loose.
