Prepare for an interview with an online counselor

An education counselor is not there to just tell you what to do or what to think for you. Its function is to advise and guide you as best as possible. However, before you get your bearings, you need to do some groundwork to figure out what questions to ask.

We have already talked about the Choosecarrera.net test, which can help students to better understand their own personality, their motivations and their desires.

However, beyond a simple test, the high school student must be responsible for their orientation and ask the appropriate questions:

  • In which subjects do I get the best grades?
  • What subjects interest me the most? The answers to these two questions may be different. For my part, I got very good grades in math, but that doesn’t mean I was fascinated by them.
  • What do I like to do outside of school hours?
  • Is it possible to work?
  • Am I tired of studying or ready to start my higher studies?
  • Am I more practical, intellectual, or artistic?
  • Am I a leader or a follower?
  • Where do I see myself in 5 years?

These are all questions that you will need to answer before consulting an educational counselor. These answers will allow the counselor to better guide the student towards one job or another, towards one subject or another … based on their findings.

A counselor cannot answer these questions for you, so no one will be able to do this reflective work for you.

The usefulness of an educational counselor.
The counselor will provide you with a lot of information about studies and subjects that could fit what you are looking for.

You can also ask questions of those around you: family, friends and especially teachers:

  • How do they see you?
  • What are your academic / professional qualities?
  • What are you missing?
  • In what fields can you improve?

Take note of all the answers and try to make a synthesis of all of them to see if they correspond with what you think and to see if they coincide with the ideas they have of you.

However, keep in mind that this is personal. No one will be able to decide your orientation for you. Not your parents, not your teachers, not your online counselor.

The online counselor needs this kind of basic information to help you. Preparing for the interview will save you time and help you orient yourself towards the goals you want to achieve.

It will be up to you to take charge of your future. Take note of everything your counselor tells you and don’t take it as an order.

Do not hesitate to go to the open days if you are already quite clear about your professional project. Get to know the schools and universities in their areas of expertise and their affinities for the future.

It will be a perfect way to confront reality and to know if what you have chosen is for you or not.
