That feeling of having found the key to the case, of having cornered a witness who was hiding the truth and of having the feeling of having turned a situation around that was condemned to an unfavorable sentence. Ace Attorney has fascinated me for many years now. His ability to get into his judgments and force me to think of a way to defend my client, has made me one of the many unconditional of each of his deliveries.

I’m glad to see that with The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles everything is as expected. That is, the quality of the Capcom saga remains intact, despite the 20 years that have elapsed since its premiere. The stories are very compelling, the characters are charismatic, and we have both a dose of drama and good humor. All in a total of 10 cases that are divided into two video games that are released for the first time in the West: The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures and The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve.

In summary, it is a collection with an incredible value, since between the two games we can easily have between 40 and 50 hours of play … and very enjoyable as well. All alongside a new protagonist and a new era : 19th century Japan and Great Britain! A trip to the past that involves an important change in theme, but above all it is accompanied by interesting features, such as the deduction dances with Herlock Sholmes or the summary exams that make a jury take center stage. Undoubtedly, two magnificent titles that only have one drawback, although quite important, and that is that they arrive without a Spanish translation .

The detail that the game is not translated into our language is actually very important this time. Ace Attorney is a series of conversational adventures that made it big in Japan two decades ago. Little by little in the West we have been getting used to this type of adventure with other sagas of the style of Professor Layton (in fact they had an interesting crossover ). These are, in short, games that require a lot of reading, that require a lot of concentration and that, ultimately, require soaking up both the plot and the situations. The gameplay is built on the language and the enigmas or mysteries that are proposed.

In other words, it required a Spanish translation . This has not been the case, and I must emphasize the difficulty that those users who do not have a certain level of English might encounter. They are magnificent games, with excellently planned investigations and judgments … but that not all players can enjoy equally. For this reason, I recommend that you see the material that accompanies this analysis and values ​​if it is an English more or less adapted to your level.

That being said, The Great Ace Attorney is wonderful, both one installment and the other (they were actually raised as two parts, so don’t expect a lot of significant changes, beyond the cases). We put ourselves in the shoes of Ryunosuke Naruhodo , a young student whose appearance will be familiar to you, and he is the predecessor of Phoenix Wright, with whom he shares his way of being, but also talent. Through a series of events, his life will be completely changed and he will embark on a journey in which he must fulfill an important mission, of course with the trials as the central nucleus of the action.

And I have already told you too much. Suffice it to say that the plot has absorbed me and has been one of the elements that have led me to wait for each new case. The dialogues are very well written and although sometimes they get lost in somewhat redundant moments, they progress at a good pace and usually experience some twists that leave you really surprised . The script twists are a classic of the Ace Attorney, and in these games they are very well managed, with dramatic moments that know how to reach the players with intensity.

Capcom has been able to add small but noticeable changes without losing the original essenceBut beyond the charisma of the protagonists, which is one of the aspects that have convinced me the most, what I like the most about these games is that they make you think. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles does not disappoint. Although personally it has not been a great difficulty for me to solve the cases, I think it is partly because I have experience with the saga and in a certain way you already intuit the way in which narrative puzzles are designed . Even so, there will be times when you will lose your credibility points trying to find the key to a certain situation … because yes, there are still highly convoluted situations.

So if you are a veteran, you already know what awaits you: question witnesses, obtain evidence, present arguments… and protest! That what else. There are certain objects that you can rotate and manipulate to extract additional information. There will even be times when you show up at the crime scene to examine every little detail that catches your eye. Looking back, I realize how much this saga has advanced. Although it may not seem like it, Capcom has been able to add small but noticeable changes. All without losing the original essence.

The best thing is that the Ace Attorney saga continues to advance with new mechanics. Which are? On this occasion, we have two important news. The deduction balls involve the appearance of a new character on the scene, Herlock Sholmes. In some cases (not all), this parodic version of the creation of Arthur Conan Doyle accompanies us with his surprising deductions. The only problem is that they eventually go bizarre, but thank goodness we’re there! Therefore, we must correct those parts of his argument that do not conform to the truth, and thus together proceed to clarify the facts behind each crime.

The dances of deduction have the difficulty of choosing well which parts of the exhibition are poorly raised and presenting evidence to prove it. In the end, it is the original logic of the Ace Attorney series, only with a twist that also represents an original and striking staging, since you will see Naruhodo and Sholmes presenting arguments in unison while the alleged criminal sinks before your acuity as investigators.

The other novelty to consider is summary tests . During a good part of the game we will be in London, and there the trials are somewhat different from those in Japan. In particular, a jury will appear with an important weight when determining the guilt or not of the accused. The best thing is that we will not be mere spectators. We can intervene by pointing out the inconsistencies and contradictions that exist between the different arguments. In this way, it is possible to reverse an unfavorable situation so that it is the jury itself that recognizes their mistakes.
