Be an ELE reader abroad

To improve your professional skills, you will have to face the class.
To prepare to teach Spanish to foreigners , you can also try to become a Spanish reader . A reader is part of the teaching team and must prepare their workshops in Spanish. He teaches about 12 hours of language classes per week only in universities or public and private centers.
Most of the time, you are not dealing with beginner level students, but intermediate level, looking to improve their language skills.
Studies in this field can be pursued at the same time within a host university. Unlike the assistant, the reader is alone in class and receives a better salary.
During the classes, the reader seeks the active participation of the students. It gives them authenticity to improve their phonetics and their Spanish pronunciation . You can also participate in the development of teaching materials in collaboration with students.
There is no procedure for recruiting readers, so you can go to any country, as long as you find a host institution (language school, universities …). The working conditions differ according to the chosen country and the standard of living.
To become a reader , you must have at least a 1-year master’s degree, be a graduate and have Spanish as your mother tongue or speak Spanish alongside another language (C2 according to the CEFR, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
Look on the page of the Ministry of Education on scholarships for readers in other countries to leave as a reader. If not, you can always contact the universities themselves so that they know your interest in this regard. There are pages such as ELE Teacher that offer information about internships, volunteering, scholarships and others to work as an ELE teacher abroad.
Finally, keep in mind that a lecturer’s contract can be renewed once you are already at the center. Afterwards, you will have to change, return to Spain or become a true ELE teacher 😉 Be an ELE reader abroad
