Choosing the leotard for classical dance
The leotard is a kind of bathing suit close to the body that allows the dancer to make the slightest movement without feeling uncomfortable and that allows the dance teacher to see all the movements. It was invented by Jules Léotard, a French trapeze artist, for a show.
Not to be confused with the bodysuit. The leotard is more like a bathing suit that is worn most of the time without underwear underneath. Leotards are usually put under the maillot .
When a skirt is sewn onto the leotard, it is called a “tunic.” Otherwise, it can be worn with a longer or shorter skirt, a tutu, shorts, leggings, pants …
When choosing the jersey , you can choose a certain shape according to your morphology and preferences:
- Wide straps.
- Thin straps.
- Cross straps on the back.
- Without a back.
- With round neck.
- Short Sleeve.
- French sleeve (3/4 sleeve).
- Of long sleeve.
- With shorts …
The second issue that you should take into account when choosing your jersey is the jersey’s manufacturing material . Before, they used to be made of cotton, which is a very comfortable material but does not promote perspiration. It can also become rougher when washed. Do not hesitate to try different materials: lycra, elastane, microfiber, polyester, polyamide … Each one offers its advantages and disadvantages, it is up to you to decide which one suits you best.
It is best to try on many leotards at a dance store, especially if it is the first time. Each brand has a different size and can be smaller or larger than your usual size. The jersey should be close to the body, but without leaving marks on the skin when you take it off. Make sure that the straps are in place and that you can move without problem by doing some movements in the tent.
As for the color, you can choose it according to your preferences: pink, red, black, white, blue, green … There is something for everyone. Choosing the leotard for classical dance
