The current 2021 is being an atypical year in terms of video game launches. With the effects of the pandemic still very present, the release schedule for the first half of 2021 has been tighter than usual, although it has had some renowned premieres and a good number of large productions . In total, 82 million video games have been sold in these regions between January and June 2021. This represents a decrease of 22% compared to the first half of 2020 , when the confinements triggered the sales of games, but it is a figure 5.6% higher than in 2019 .
The digital format represents 67% of all sales produced up to and including June, thus increasing from 62% in 2020. It is important to note here, as every year, that the GSD report does not take into account Nintendo’s digital sales. nor Bethesda , since neither of them shares that data. That is why the agency does not count the sales of its games when calculating the physical / digital distribution, nor the sales in regions that do not share their physical sales.
