How to learn English grammar?
Let’s go to one of the parts that most concern us when it comes to learning the language of Shakespeare: how do you study grammar?
Although learning English grammar is not always very interesting, there are different ways to make it a more fun task depending on your tastes and your profile.
For example, there are many mobile apps or websites that offer English lessons and exercises. They are developed in an educational and interactive way and you will learn while having fun.
Apps allow you to learn while having fun. In addition, it is an excellent way to memorize content without having the feeling that you are constantly working.
You can also enjoy English culture by reading books in English or watching movies and series in their original version . It’s a great way to get used to the English accent and familiarize your brain with the sounds of the language, as well as with sentence construction.
Another way to learn English is to take an immersion during a language stay or a tourist trip . It is the ideal opportunity to practice English day by day and progress in a much faster and more efficient way.
“When I came to Australia with the intention of looking for work, I was not even able to pronounce a sentence correctly: I did not understand irregular verbs and conjugated them badly, I did not have enough vocabulary, I doubted what I said every other word, etc.
Six months later, thanks to that language immersion experience, my language level changed completely. I understood everything they said to me and was able to carry on an elaborate conversation!
There is nothing better than traveling to improve our level of English. The trips are like intensive classes, in which we work day by day on phonetics, pronunciation, grammar, etc. And all while doing day-to-day tasks (going shopping, going to the gym, going out for a drink, etc.).
To recognize the grammatical elements of a sentence, you have to know how to recognize the type of words that are in the language of Shakespeare:
Names.
Pronouns.
Articles.
Adjectives
Verbs
Adverbs.
Prepositions
Interjections .
The good news is that English is a language with roots coming from northern Europe, but its vocabulary and grammar were modified by the influences of the Normans and the Franks in the Middle Ages. In fact, it turns out that 70% of the English lexical origin is of French and Norman origin, and our language also shares many roots with all of them.
On the other hand, another of the facilities of English is that it has no grammatical gender. The distinction between masculine and feminine is only made with the personal pronouns he and she , the rest of nouns are considered neuter.
English is a language that follows the SVO ( Subject-Verb-Object ) order, just like our mother tongue.
We must agree the verb with the subject ( I am, you are, he / she is, we are, you are, they are ), but the adjective is usually invariable:
The table is blue – The table is blue.
The tables are blue – The tables are blue.
The main difference is that in Spanish we can omit the subject, but in English it must always appear explicit.
Why should you learn English grammar?: How to learn English grammar?
Most nouns in English use the ending “s” to form the plural: one ball – two balls . However, unlike what happens with the Romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian …), no definite article is used that agrees in gender and number with the subject ( el, la, los, las , in Spanish).
In English we use a single definite article ( the ), and two indefinite articles ( a , which is used when the next word begins with a consonant, and an , which is used when the next word begins with a vowel). Thus, we say a dog, a cat, a table, a house, a computer, a glass , but an apple, an orange, an idea.
A mnemonic rule that we advise you: in English, the article the is not always used if the noun has a general value. For example:
The cat is white (“The cat is white”, singular) – We refer to a specific cat that is white.
Cats are independent (“Cats are independent,” plural).
However, if we refer to a particular group of cats, we can use the article the and say: The cats are white.
The nominal group in English is relatively straightforward. We agree the noun with the subject, following this rule:
We add an “s” to the singular form ( cat / cats, table / tables, shoe / shoes, spoon / spoons, dog / dogs , etc.).
We add “es” to words that end in “s” or “ss”, “sh” and “ch”: bus / busses, glass / glasses, kiss / kisses, beach / beaches .
We add “ies” to words ending in “y”: party / parties, supply / supplies, study / studies.
Be careful with irregular plurals: man / men, woman / women, foot / feet, mouse / mice, tooth / teeth, child / children, leaf / leaves, knife / knives, etc.
But this is not all, since you also have to learn the conjugation, the tenses and the modes, the comparatives, the superlatives, and practice the pronunciation and intonation of English.
