HMD Global has confirmed that its first 5G mobile will arrive in 2020 for “half” what today’s 5G mobiles cost. The fact that the manufacturer is preparing a Nokia 5G mobile is not a secret for anyone, but this one will differ from the rest due to its price tag. How much are we talking about specifically? Well, according to  Juho Sarvikas , HMD’s chief product officer, “Half of what exists today.” This would place Nokia’s mobile in the $ 500 range, of course, if we take the average cost of the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G and LG V50  ThinQ  5G in the United States.

According to the statements offered by the HMD Global executive to the Digital Trends portal  , the company sees an opportunity to bring 5G connectivity to the most affordable segment of the market.  

I would say affordable relative to what is available today. I would love to see us at half the price where 5G is today. “ 

In this sense, a Nokia 5G with a cost of around 500 to 650 euros would mark a before and after , significantly boosting the adoption of 5G. However, HMD is not without rivals, as Huawei and  MediaTek  are at work in the development of a low-cost 5G mobile. Likewise, companies like Motorola and  OnePlus  are also in the race to offer affordable alternatives by 2020. 

Returning to the main topic,  Sarkivas  also assured that HMD is working closely with micro-transistor vendors to achieve this goal (probably Qualcomm). It is also mentioned that HMD is in negotiations with the US operators and aiming to bring released 5G mobiles , which would be a novelty, since so far all 5G mobiles are limited to a single telephone operator, that is, they are not interoperable . 

If HMD succeeded in launching a Nokia 5G mobile at half the price of its competition, then it would considerably lower the cost of admission to the 5G era, bringing this technology closer to the masses and promoting its adoption. However, beyond the fact that it will arrive at some point in 2020, we do not have information corresponding to the Nokia 5G mobile, but we hope to know more about it during MWC 2020 in Barcelona.
