OnePlus Concept One, the first mobile with invisible cameras

OnePlus remains at the forefront of the smartphone industry and is proud to present the first mobile with electrochromic glass during CES 2020 in Las Vegas, the OnePlus Concept One , a mobile that, as its name implies, is conceptual and which has the ability to change its appearance from transparent to translucent to hide your photographic sensors.

The above mentioned means that this device manages to create the illusion of invisible cameras, this being the next step for the evolution of mobile phones with full screen and multiple rear cameras.

To make this mobile a reality, OnePlus has spent more than 8 months perfecting the technology called “Electrochromic CMF” , which would not have been possible without the help of McLaren, the famous car brand with which they have already partnered in the past. for special editions of the OnePlus 7T Pro .

In this vein, OnePlus has managed to incorporate the same technology that McLaren employs in its electrochromic sunroofs , but in a smartphone, which is quite an engineering achievement by the OnePlus R&D team. In this way, the rear camera sensors appear hidden behind an opaque electrochromic glass layer, which becomes translucent when electrical energy flows through it, thus revealing the photographic sensors when they are needed.

This process only takes 0.7 seconds , in that short period of time the OnePlus Concept One transforms its cover from translucent black to transparent.

In addition to the aesthetic benefit of electrochromic glass, it also offers photographic advantages , as it can act as a polarizing filter, thus capturing sharper photos with better details under bright light conditions.

This technology is inspired by that used in sports cars such as the Spider 720S McLaren, which is why the OnePlus Concept One has that iconic papaya orange look with a leather finish.

When will it be available?

Regarding the mobile itself, it is important to clarify that it is a conceptual device , whose sole purpose is to demonstrate the cutting-edge technology that OnePlus has been working on, so it will be unlikely to see it hit the market any time soon. However, what we can hope is to see this technology in a future mobile of the brand, given that Pete Lau -CEO and Founder of OnePlus- stated that “this is only the beginning of many other possibilities that will be offered in the future” .

The other data we have about the OnePlus Concept One is that it has a 90HZ AMOLED QHD + screen without a notch and with a pop-up front camera. Also, the glass panels it uses on the back cover are 0.1mm thick each, for a total of 0.35mm together, which is very similar to the average thickness of a screen protector.
