Samsung patents a smartphone with a round screen and 3 panels
A new patent from the Korean brand Samsung was released , which consists of a phone where the upper and lower edge of the screen are recurved . To achieve this effect, three screens would be used, one main and two in the shape of an arc. Currently rounding the screen of a cell phone is only possible at the corners, while the remaining edges are completely straight, but it seems that the Korean company would like to break with this paradigm.
In 2019 Samsung filed this new patent with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office), which was approved on January 23, 2020 by this body. This shows us the interest that Samsung has in revolutionizing the design of the world of cell phones. This patent was recently spotted by the Let’s Go Digital blog , which has taken the time to prepare a couple of renderings to illustrate what this device would look like.
Samsung imagines a rounded mobile with three screens: Samsung patents a smartphone with a round screen and 3 panels
Going into detail, the designs of smartphones have remained quite consistent in recent years, so it is time to radically change their design, something that was not achieved until the appearance of terminals with a flexible screen such as the Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Mate X.
However, these devices have not become the norm and large manufacturers continue to explore ideas that allow them to revolutionize the design of mobile phones beyond simply occupying the entire front using the screen. Undoubtedly it is a rather curious and innovative idea, since it would be a terminal with three screens; two in the shape of an arc and a main screen in a rectangular way , but that would function as a single screen.
To achieve this result, an intrinsic method would be used, which is based on dividing the screen into three parts. A central part, that is to say a common rectangular screen and two curved screens with reduced size in the upper and lower part of the terminal. The main screen would provide the same function as the common ones. However, the arc-shaped screens would be dedicated to displaying applications, shortcuts, notifications, among other things.
As always, just because Samsung has patented something like this doesn’t mean it’s going to be using it on a smart device anytime soon or using it at all, but it’s always a possibility worth considering, especially in light of that the first time we heard about the Galaxy Fold was through news like this.
