Samsung patents a Smartphone with a wraparound screen
Avistad to originally by LetsGoDigital , came to light a patent on a mobile phone screen surround designed by Samsung . This patent – which has passed through the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) – describes what would be the first mobile with a wraparound screen, that is, a panel flexible enough to extend over the edge of the Smartphone and continue to the back of the mobile.
We know that the Galaxy Fold has suffered setbacks, but technological innovation does not stop, and Samsung clearly knows that the Galaxy Fold is just the first step in the field of flexible screen smartphones.
What use would a mobile with a surround screen have? : Samsung patents a Smartphone with a wraparound screen
The registered patent describes a number of use cases in which a display with these characteristics could be useful . In the first place, it would allow the main cameras to act as both front and rear sensors, eliminating the need to place cameras on both sides and achieving excellent quality selfies.
The illustrations show the Samsung device being used for live translations . In addition, thanks to the double-sided screen, the user could interact with different applications on each side , such as answering calls on one side and chatting on the other.
Another function that catches our attention is the possibility of using the upper strip of the phone as a notification bar . It could show general information, such as received messages and calls; in addition, it would respond to floating movements, which means that it would not be necessary to physically touch the screen.
Samsung Surround Display Device Operation
LetsGoDigital describes that it is not really a folding phone, but a double-sided phone, which consists of three parts that make up the screen and that are merged into one. The surface of it extends over the top, covering ¾ of the back. The panel is placed on a support, in such a way that it is held in a fixed position. This technology is described as a “Multiplane” screen.
In another vein, the Samsung device would have a function described as “Hovering” (floating movements) , which means that the screen would be able to be activated by just bringing your hand within 2 or 5 centimeters of it , but not just that, but it would also be possible to use the S Pen from the Galaxy Note series for the same purpose.
It is worth noting that it is not yet clear what the position of the main camera will be. The camera could be located in the front, at the top, between the second and third part of the screen, or it could even be integrated into the case, all the options are on the table.
At the moment it is difficult to determine whether or not Samsung will use this patent on a real smartphone, but there are certainly indications that in the near future we will see more devices with a double-sided screen.
