Brazil has recorded the most ruthless increase and scientists predict it will soon overcome the worst of a record wave in January in the United States, after more than 4,000 deaths a day on Tuesday.
Intensive care units are near their maximum capacity in Peru and Ecuador and cases have doubled in parts of Bolivia and Colombia in the last week, Etienne said, adding that the Southern Cone is also experiencing an acceleration of cases.
The United States, Brazil and Argentina are among the 10 countries with the highest number of new infections globally, Etienne said.
In Argentina, nighttime circulation will be prohibited from next Friday and for three weeks, between 0:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., and social activities in private homes will be suspended, a measure that is applied for the first time in the country before the exponential increase in infections.
