Spanish dance
Spanish dance
As we have mentioned, Spanish dance is the set of traditional Spanish dances. However, sometimes we hear of the existence of a “Spanish dance” but what does it refer to? It actually refers to flamenco dance, the typical dance of southern Spain.
And it is that due to different audiovisual productions and the projection of a biased image of Spanish culture, the belief has spread (both nationally and abroad) that this flamenco dance is the dance of Spain, when in reality it is a regional dance like many others in our country.
Flamenco dancing: Spanish dance
Are flamenco dance and Sevillian dance the same? No. Again the lack of knowledge of their own culture makes many a mess. The sevillana is a flamenco style. So all sevillanas are flamenco dance but not all flamenco dances are sevillanas.
Flamenco, in addition to being a type of dance, is a musical genre. It was developed in the south of Spain, in Andalusia, and in particular in the area of Hueva, Cádiz, Seville and Jerez de la Frontera. It has also been highly developed in Murcia and Extremadura.

Its origin is not entirely clear, since it is most likely a fusion of cultures. The popular Andalusian culture and the culture of the Roma people are undoubtedly the germ of this genre, but it is very likely that other cultures that came together in southern Spain have contributed their bit. The Moors, the Sephardim, the Castilians; They all passed through Andalusian lands and left their mark on the culture.
Flamenco, both its music and its dance, have crossed borders and conquered the hearts of half the world. So much is the cultural value of this genre that in 2010 it was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco.
And so that there is no more confusion, other flamenco styles, in addition to the Sevillian, are bulerías, fandangos, cantes del levante, cantiñas and tangos.
