The best places in Hokkaido
The landscape of Hokkaido is very different from the other islands: it is the great Japanese north and it shows!
Hokkaido is the island that we find in the north of Japan, a place famous for being an especially popular vacation destination among the Japanese. You will find a lot of places that you can visit during your trip to Hokkaido and, without a doubt, you would need several trips to Japan to visit them all, but here we leave you a summary!
Hokkaido is mostly famous for winter sports in ski resorts, like Niseko . The high mountains and the freezing climate will allow you to feel like a samurai sliding down the Japanese ski slopes. This snow-covered Japanese landscape is also an exceptional sight.
In Hokkaido, you must visit the capital of Hokkaido, Sapporo, which has more than 2 million inhabitants. It is a popular destination for Japanese tourism that is certainly not a megalopolis but has many assets such as its gastronomy and its hot springs.
You can visit other cities in Hokkaido such as:
- Abashiri, a coastal city.
- Hakodate, a port city.
- Asahikawa and its famous zoo.
- Chitose, which is home to the international airport.
- Furano and its ski resort.
Hokkaido also has many spas (Onsen) where you can take the hot springs, especially in the Hell Valley (Jigokudani) in Noboribetsu , a town very close to the Hiyoriyama volcano, from where large fumaroles come out of the hot springs. Japanese hot springs, which have a regenerative effect on the body, are part of traditional Japan and a visit to Japan without trying them would be a real shame.
Other places that are also very interesting are the Toya Lake Geopark , the Yotei volcanic mount that resembles Mount Fuji or the Makomanai Takino Buddhist cemetery with its giant Buddha. It is impossible to get bored in Hokkaido!
