The budget for a trip to Rio de Janeiro
The budget for a trip to Rio de Janeiro
Before lying on the beaches of Rio, calculate the budget you have.
The budget to visit Rio depends mainly on the way you travel. Brazil is not one of the cheapest countries in South America. On average, it costs about € 40 per day and per person, which includes accommodation, food and visits. In comparison, the daily budget is similar to any organized trip to Spain.
The city of Rio is cheaper than the capital, Sao Paulo, but it is more expensive than a smaller Brazilian city.
There are 5 elements that you should take into account when planning the trip:
- The flight.
- Accommodation.
- Food.
- The visits.
- Displacements around the city.
The flight
On average, a Madrid-Rio flight costs between € 500 and € 600 , but prices may vary depending on how far in advance the ticket is purchased and the time of year.
Our advice: buy your flight tickets at least 3 months in advance by comparing them on Skyscanner or Google Flight.
Accommodation
Accommodation will be your second most important expense after the flight. Rents can skyrocket in Rio and fetch New York or Paris prices. However, tourists can opt for different options depending on their wishes: hostel, hotel or Airbnb.
Our advice: set a budget per night and compare the addresses on Booking and Airbnb by reading the reviews of previous travelers.
Food
Traveling is also an ideal occasion to discover Brazilian culture through its cuisine : acai puree, apim bolhinos, moqueca, Amazonian fish stew, vatapa, but also fruits of all kinds. With € 10 per day and per person, you should be able to survive perfectly!
Our advice: to save money, go to restaurants that sell food by the kilo or street stalls.
Tourist visits
The visits to Corcovado and Sugar Loaf cost about 15 € each. Entry to the botanical garden costs less than € 4 and there are free tours of the city organized by the locals. To visit the Ilha Grande, you will have to include it with the price of the ferry (about € 3).
Our advice: get your tickets in advance to save time in queues.
Displacement
Public transport is not very developed in Rio. It is better to avoid the bus as it is not very reliable. The metro is safe but it only works in the center and south to Ipanema. Taxis are cheap and safer at night.
Our advice: download the .99pop application, you will save approximately 20% on taxi rides.
