The IF, AND, OR and NOT functions in Excel

The IF, AND, OR, and NOT functions  are  logical comparison functions . These functions are not the best known in Excel, but they can be very useful to clarify a situation and speed up calculations automatically.

They allow to  relate various data according to the conditions to obtain a result regarding the fulfillment or not of these conditions . The result will be “TRUE” or “FALSE”.

But how do they work? To use the logical comparison functions, you need to place the calculation at the end of the row. In the chosen cell, type “=” to tell the software that you want to perform an operation.

The operation is written as follows:

  • = YES (A2> 10, «Yes», «No»)

This operation is an example to understand the structure of the IF function. Thus, if the number in cell A2 is greater than 10, the result will be “Yes”. If the number is less, the solution will be “No”.

To relate different data, we use what are called  logical operators,  which are: equal (=), not equal to (<>), greater than (>), greater than or equal to (> =), less than (<), less than or equal to (<=).

Comparisons can not only be made with numbers; data can be words.

The IF function is the main function. Other functions (AND, OR, and NOT) can  be added to the condition function  to specify this condition.

In this way, we have the function , which introduces the idea that both conditions must be met for the answer to be positive. The OR function , on the other hand, expresses the wish that a condition of several is fulfilled to obtain the positive result. Finally, the NO function implies that the condition must not be met for the result to be positive.

It is quite possible to imagine operations where all functions are used. In that case we are talking about  nested functions , which allow you to play with various conditions if necessary. The IF, AND, OR and NOT functions in Excel
