Vivo works on a smartphone capable of changing the color of its glass

Vivo is a company that is at the forefront of technological innovation in smartphones, we’ve seen them patent everything from in-display fingerprint scanners to ultra-fast charging batteries  . And obviously the company does not plan to stop here, as evidenced by its next project: a mobile capable of changing color with the push of a button.

As can be seen in a video that appeared on Weibo (the equivalent of Facebook in China), Vivo has a mobile prototype that changes the tonality of its back cover, going from an intense sapphire blue to a silver gray.

Industry experts’ explanation indicates that Vivo has been able to achieve these results through the use of an electrochromic glass back panel , which changes colors according to the voltage applied to it.

This same technology is already used today in luxury cars and windows to change the tone of the glass, but seeing it applied to a smartphone is not innovative, since the only other example that currently exists is the  OnePlus Concept One shown at CES. 2020 , which has the ability to darken the rear camera lenses to hide them.

However, there seem to be limitations with this application of the technology, as the variety of colors is non-existent in the demo, simply going from a dark tone to a much lighter one.

The video also explains that power consumption has been taken into account when changing the color, so it shouldn’t affect the battery severely.

Electrochromic glass, the secret behind the Vivo mobile

At the moment the name of the Vivo prototype terminal is unknown , as well as its specifications, and in all the videos shown so far, the photographic module is covered so as not to reveal information, but it undeniably bears a certain kinship with the brand’s X50 series, although that is irrelevant for now.

In this vein, Vivo has confirmed to the media that it is working on said technology to incorporate it into its new smartphones, but it is not yet known whether it will lead to a massive increase in the cost of production or not. Likewise, it also remains to be determined whether it will become the new trend among manufacturers or a simple curiosity relegated to a conceptual phone; only time will tell.
