As a powerful symbol of the United States of America and the war of independence that has allowed it to be a country in its own right, the painting Washington Crossing the Delaware recounts an event that preceded the creation of the country of freedom.
It was signed by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze, a German-American painter who made it in 1851. The painting depicts George Washington , the first American president, crossing the Delaware River during a military operation in 1776.

This painting represents the Greek hero Oedipus in front of the Sphinx that threatens the city of Thebes and blocks his way. The Sphinx poses a riddle to our hero who gives the correct answer and manages to defeat an extremely dangerous creature!
