What training do you need to be a visual arts teacher?
The teaching of the visual arts is not made for everyone, but must be based on a true vocation. Those who are passionate about the arts choose this path in order to combine their passion with professional life. However, to become a plastic arts teacher you must know what options you have for training in plastic arts.
As you know, in Spain there are different educational centers (private, subsidized and public), as well as the possibility of working in different educational stages (Infant, Primary, Secondary, Baccalaureate, Vocational Training, university …).
In the case of wanting to teach classes in the Infant and Primary stages, you will have to take the Teaching degree at any Spanish university. Of course, remember that the plastic arts begin to be taught as a subject in itself from the stage of Primary Education (Art Education, Plastic, Drawing … there are many names). In this case, your specialization must come from the mention you choose (artistic education) and courses or masters that specialize in plastic arts .
If you opt for these stages, you should know that you can work in all types of educational centers, although to be able to access the civil servant position (within the public educational system) you must obtain your place in the competitive examination .
For the rest of the educational stages, you can carry out specialized studies in plastic arts through a vocational training degree (either medium or higher) or through a university degree.
Within the training offer of university degrees, it is worth mentioning:
- Degree in Graphic Design
- Degree in Fashion Design
- Bachelor of Fine Arts
- Bachelor of Arts and Design
- Degree in Interior Design
- Degree in Digital Arts
- Higher Degree in Conservation and Restoration of Painting / Sculpture
- Degree in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Assets
Once you have completed your studies, you will need training in pedagogy, which you can obtain through a master’s degree such as the master’s degree in Compulsory Secondary Education, Baccalaureate, Vocational Training and Language Teaching.
With this training, you will be able to work in any educational center in Spain. Of course, remember that in order to enter the public educational system, you will need your place through the oppositions.
If you prefer, you can work in a private or subsidized center without having to go through the opposition process. The difference is that you will not have the stability that being a state official gives you.
You can also teach at a national art school, but to find out what you need, you will need to research their hiring procedures and possible positions available.
It is also possible to teach in associations of classes of drawing, painting, etc. Of course, the option of classes at home is also open to artists without a degree.
