Which authors to choose to discover Russian literature?

Do you want to discover the ins and outs of Russian literature? Here are some authors to get you started:

  • Ivan Turgenev:  very easy to read, does not lose digression. We recommend First love and Parents and children . Both are about a generational clash.
  • Léon Tolstoy:  Haven’t you read Anna Karenina yet ? Maybe you have seen the movie, their dances, their dresses, their adulteries… But Anna Karenina is also the spiritual search of a lost young woman.
  • Anton Chekhov – Mostly a  short novel writer, he’s an easy author to start with. We advise you My Life , a first-person narrative of a young nobleman who prefers to opt for a physical job instead of an office job.
  • Nadezhda Durova:  unknown to many, she wrote her memoirs, The cavalry maiden , where she recounts her life in the army and her travels. It is easy to read and very inspiring!
  • Andrei Kurkov:  ok, he’s Ukrainian but he writes in Russian, which is what counts! Death with a Penguin is an absurd epic of corrupt businessmen, war survivors, and pre-written obituaries. As you see, Kurkov, with his black humor, reveals the absurdities of the former USSR.
