Alphabet Inc.’s Google will launch a network of public sites to connect wirelessly to the internet in Mexico as part of its efforts to improve connectivity in emerging economies and bring its products to more users.
Google Station, a network of Wi-Fi sites in high-traffic locations, will launch in Mexico initially with 56 points, Google said.
Mexico will be the third country where Google Station will operate, after India and Indonesia, and the first in Latin America.
And it is that great advances have been made in connectivity since the reform of the sector in 2013 that sought to end the long dominance of AméricaMóvil, of the magnate Carlos Slim.
From 2013 to 2016, the number of people with internet access increased by 20 million, according to a report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
“We found that public Wi-Fi is still a very important way to connect to the internet,” Anjali Joshi, vice president of product at Google, told reporters, adding that the company sees Mexico as a good entry point into Latin America.
The equipment for the public sites was provided by the Mexican company SitWifi.
How do I log on?: Free Internet for all!
Connecting will be very simple, you must be in a Google Station for the Wi-Fi signal to be recognized. You must click, confirm your intention to connect and that’s it!
Can my information be stolen?: Free Internet for all!
Google confirmed that their network is the most secure, as they have experience in monitoring network behavior and detecting malicious code.
The link between the network and the user will be fully encrypted, this means that you will be able to make banking transactions or online purchases, without any risk of a cyberattack or theft of information.
To connect Google does not ask you for information of any kind, not even your email “we do not store or take any type of data from Internet users.”
So what does Google gain?
Of course, there is an interest of the company, in this case it is an advertising profit, because while you browse you will be at the expense of ads being displayed, which generate profits for the company.
